Biography

President of Stichting SOPHIA: The European Foundation for Doing Philosophy with Children and Director of EPIC, Dr. Catherine McCall ( BA Hons MA TEFL MSc PHD FRSA) trained as a philosopher and psychologist at Trinity College , UWIST and Manchester University. A colleague of Matthew Lipman , Catherine pioneered philosophical inquiry with young children in 1984 and created and taught graduate P4C courses for teachers during her tenure as Visiting Professor at the IAPC (USA). (Her work with young children and teachers featured in the BBC documentary Socrates for Six year olds in 1990.) In 1985- 86 she ran a series of international Training Workshops introducing P4C, Nelson’s Socratic Method and PI to Ireland, the UK, France and Spain. Returning to Scotland in 1990, Catherine established the Postgraduate Centre for Philosophical Inquiry at Glasgow University , where she supervised PhD. students, trained teachers and others through the M.Phil. degree in Philosophical Inquiry and taught P4C postgraduate courses in European universities.

As well as writing P4C books and teaching materials, Catherine currently offers professional development courses for P4C Teacher Trainers, teaches Philosophical Inquiry at Strathclyde University and is a consultant with LEA’s, and schools. Her work has featured in numerous newspaper articles, radio and TV documentary features, nationally and internationally over 20 years.
